Why is the Players Championship special? Is it still the PGA Tour’s “fifth major”?

Image
Suburban Jacksonville, Florida is a beautiful part of the world, and just behind the dunes of Ponte Vedra Beach lies a stadium course that has become legendary over the last half century. Begun in 1974, the Tournament Players Championship quickly became a mainstay of the PGA calendar. Despite not being a major , the event attracted all of the great and the good in professional Golf , leading to it being dubbed “the fifth major .” The total prize money of $25 million is more than any of the four majors, with the winner collecting $4.5 million and 750 FedEx Cup points. But it is about more than just money. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass becomes a battleground where skill, nerve, and luck intertwine, shaping destinies in the shifting winds of fate. One cannot deny the tournament’s magnetic pull, drawing players and spectators alike to its hallowed grounds. Its significance transcends labels, embodying the essence of competition at its most primal. Throwback to Brooks Koepka making ...

Mo Salah: ‘I won’t leave Liverpool because Jurgen Klopp is leaving’

Image
Mohamed Salah has insisted Jurgen Klopp‘s decision to leave Liverpool won’t impact his future with the club, amid speculation that key names could depart. Though the dust has settled to an extent following Klopp’s shock announcement back in January, there remains an uncertainty around Liverpool. Fenway Sports Group are close to appointing Michael Edwards in a senior role to oversee Football operations, while Richard Hughes is expected to follow as sporting director. But with Klopp’s successor not yet established, there could be concerns over key players within the squad deciding it is time to move elsewhere. Salah and Virgil van Dijk are chief among those with doubts over their futures, given their contracts expire in 2025 – the captain was already forced to dismiss speculation after admitting he “didn’t know” whether he saw himself as part of the next reign. Speaking to Jamie Carragher in an interview for Sky Sports , however, ...

Michael Edwards CLOSE to Liverpool return – along with new sporting director

Image
Liverpool’s restructuring in the post-Jurgen Klopp era is starting to take shape, with Michael Edwards close to making a return and a new sporting director all but lined up. Owners Fenway Sports Group have been steadfast in their pursuit of seeing Edwards return to the club as they plot life without their talismanic German. It was only on Thursday evening that reports broke over fresh talks between FSG and Edwards in America, and now the Athletic‘s David Ornstein has stated an agreement is “close.” The position would see Edwards take on a senior role with FSG, which would include overseeing Liverpool’s football operations, a step up from his previous role as sporting director. Ornstein goes on to report that if Edwards does accept the offer, “the sporting director position is expected to be filled by Richard Hughes.” Hughes recently vacated his position as technical director at Bournemouth, and his move to Anfield would negate a get...

The biggest club in the Second City, Villa have a bulging trophy cabinet and, while much of it might have been assembled in the mustachioed days of William McGregor and George Ramsay, they are in the sextet of English clubs to have lifted the European Cup.
