F1 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix - Race Results

Sergio Perez claimed a second Formula 1 victory of the season in a comfortable drive in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, to eat into Max Verstappen's points lead.

The Mexican benefited from the timing of a Safety Car to leapfrog Verstappen and built a healthy gap when the race resumed, going onto claim his sixth Grand Prix victory.

Pole-sitter Charles Leclerc took a first podium of the season for Ferrari in third, with Fernando Alonso fourth, Carlos Sainz fifth and Lewis Hamilton in sixth.

Virgil van Dijk charged by FA after Newcastle red card

The Football Association have charged Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk over his conduct in the aftermath of his red card in the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United. Van Dijk was shown a straight red card shortly before the half-hour mark after he fouled Alexander Isak as Liverpool's last defender. As the decision was being reviewed by VAR, Van Dijk was seen arguing with referee John Brooks and the FA have now opted to take action against the Liverpool centre-back. "Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League Game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August," a statement from the FA read. "It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official." Brown sets McLaren ambitious target after slow 2023 start

Zak Brown says he wants to see McLaren fighting the so-called "top four" teams in Formula 1 by the end of 2023, but acknowledges that the squad won't be challenging them for position. McLaren have endured a slow start to 2023, with their launch MCL60 design being hobbled until a upgrade package arrived in Azerbaijan, improving the floor of the car.
