MLB picks 6/21: YRFI & NRFI best bets today | Pickswise
The Major League Baseball week continues with a 15-game slate on Wednesday. It includes 8 afternoon games, as a whole host of teams are wrapping up series and then beginning new ones on either Thursday or Friday. Baltimore and Tampa Bay are getting things started at 12:10 pm ET, and there are also intriguing matchups such as Braves vs Phillies and Mets vs Astros. Needless to say, options abound for YRFI/NRFI bets.
This market has become extremely popular in baseball betting. After all, you don’t have to sit around for 3 hours (or maybe a lot less now that Games are not as long on average!) to see if your wager hits; the satisfaction (or in some cases disappointment) is immediate. It all comes down to the first inning.
Here are my best YRFI/NRFI bets for Wednesday as I try to maintain momentum from my current 4-0 run. Also, be sure to check out all of our MLB picks.

New York Mets vs Houston Astros: NRFI (-106)
This should be a great pitching matchup between Houston’s Cristian Javier and New York’s Tylor Megill. Javier is 7-1 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in addition to 76 strikeouts and a mere 19 walks in 80.2 innings. The right-hander, who is in obvious AL CY Young contention, has allowed a first-inning run just twice – including only once in his last 13 starts. Megill (6-4, 4.83 ERA) has made 5 consecutive appearances that have featured scoreless first frames. The right-hander has yielded just 1 run overall in 2 of his last 3 outings.
With Javier rolling and the Mets struggling (and also missing Pete Alonso), I’m not worried at all about Javier’s first-inning outlook. The Astros’ lineup presents more danger, but not a single hitter on the team has ever faced Megill. There could be some growing pains at least for the first time through the order. I’m counting on a pitchers’ duel, especially in the early stages.

Boston Red Sox vs Minnesota Twins: NRFI (-115)
With Sonny Gray taking the mound to begin Wednesday’s game between the Twins and Red Sox, Minnesota should be able to get NRFI bettors halfway home. Gray has been stellar in 2023, with a 4-1 record and 2.37 ERA to go along with 79 strikeouts in 76.0 innings. The right-hander has made a whopping 10 consecutive appearances without giving up a run in the first inning. This stretch includes an outing against Boston on April 18, when Gray worked 5.0 innings of 1-run baseball and recorded 7 Ks in 5.0 innings of work.
The visitors are countering with Garrett Whitlock, who has been outstanding over his past 2 starts. He held the Yankees to 2 runs (1 earned) in 6.1 innings and then limited the Rockies to 2 runs in 7.0 innings. Both of those outings included perfect opening frames for Whitlock. Max Kepler is the only player in Minnesota’s lineup who has ever recorded a hit off the righty, so there isn’t much familiarity at all.
