NBA Coach of the Year Odds - Thunder Boss Preseason Favorite

Sacramento's Mike Brown took the NBA Coach of the Year odds by storm last year, leading a revival that saw the Kings end their eons-long playoff drought by winning the Pacific Division. 

This season, the NBA odds tell a different story, as Brown (+2,500) would become the first coach ever to repeat as COY winner were he to win this award — largely predicated on exceeding expectations or overcoming unexpected adversity — again. 

Instead, there's a new wave of contenders atop the odds board, with a leap-ready squad's coach sitting as the favorite.

Latest NBA Coach of the Year award odds update

8/25/2023: The Thunder's Mark Daigneault sits atop a relatively tight field preseason, with OKC teeming with upside and seemingly ready to ascend the West hierarchy. Behind him sit the Heat's Erik Spoelstra — fresh off yet another Finals run — and the Celtics' Joe Mazzulla, looking to make even more of an impact with a full season of expectations under his belt.

Overall, the field's priced very tightly, as this is a high-variance award that's largely based on narrative, where any number of surprise contenders can emerge midseason. While the pieces are mostly in place for Daigneault & Co. to contend, don't be surprised if this board looks entirely different come December or January.

Understanding NBA Coach of the Year odds 

Most sportsbooks will display odds in the American format as listed above. We'll use 2019-20's Rookie of the Year race as an example: 

As the season progressed, with Ja Morant having been a huge favorite, his odds had a minus (-) sign ahead of the number: 

  • Ja Morant -500

This means that a bettor needs to wager $500 to win $100. Other candidates with worse odds would have a plus (+) sign ahead of the number. Early in the season, before any clear favorite is established, betting options will be listed as such: 

  • Zion Williamson +650

Here, a bettor stands to profit $650 for every $100 wagered.

  • Mike Brown's 2023 victory was the first time in 10 years (excluding COVID-altered schedules  — 2019-20, 2020-21) the Coach of the Year's team hadn't won 55+ games.
