Are the Chiefs or the 49ers the home team for Super Bowl LVIII? What colors will they wear?

The regular season of the 2023 National Football League is a distant memory. The postseason Divisional and Conference clashes are disappearing in the rear view mirror. All that is left is the big one, the final two teams clashing at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII. Step forward, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.

Both franchises have a notable History when it comes to the Vince Lombardi Trophy and even just a passing glimpse of the famous team colors is enough to identify them. But with both of these teams known for their red home jerseys, who will take that honor at the neutral venue? It’s rather simple.

Which Super Bowl team is the ‘home’ team?

As you are more than aware, the Super Bowl is a contest between the ‘best’ teams from the AFC and the NFC, or at least the ones that progressed through their respective conference playoffs to get there. And as the venue for the showpiece final is deemed neutral (yes, even if it happens to be the home of one of the finalists), the home team is simply alternated by conference each year.

With the NFL finalists (the Philadelphia Eagles) getting the nod last year, it is the turn of the AFC in 2024 and that designates the Chiefs as the home team.

What colors do the teams wear?

The advantage of being the home team, especially if you have a good winning record with a particular uniform, is that you get to choose what color to wear. Normally this means the ‘home’ jersey and the most associated franchise style. And just like that, the Chiefs made their choice to go with that.

For their part, the designated ‘away’ team does get to call the coin toss ahead of the start of the game. That said, losing the coin toss has proven to be a mighty powerful outcome in recent years, although the Chiefs bucked that particular trend a year ago.
